Part of the line up for Air Max Day 2018, Nike and Sean Wotherspoon finally released their highly anticipated collaboration, and after first glance it’s been a release that has far from disappointed so far.
Voted the best sneakers from Nike’s Vote Forward Competition, the people’s champ Wotherspoon merges a colour block of vivid pastels to depict the essence of the Vintage Nike Hat and Windbreaker era from the 80s and 90s. With the sneaker embodying everything that is summer from Virginia to LA, the shoe sports 4 panels, which gives it that quirky look that manages to grab the attention from first look.
Unusually the shoe combines the best of the Air Max 97s on the upper sole, with an Air Max One mid sole. This provides great comfort on the heel area that has been loved by fans for many years, while also exhibiting the unique design the 97’s showcase which has made it one of the most prevalent Nike range in the past couple years. Wotherspoon stated that he wanted merge two of his favourite shoes together as one, which is lucky for us, as collectors get two enjoy the beauty of having two brand statements as one. The shoe also boasts true comfort from the insole, as we’re blessed with an ocean blue velour texture from heel to toe. Wotherspoon also placed a smiley face on the insole, as he wanted a face smiling to be the first thing we’d see when putting on the shoes.
The attention to detail hasn’t failed to impress too, as Wotherspoon seemed to create the shoe with his beach style fashion of white tees and shorts. With an interchangeable tongue patch whether it’s the Nike Swoosh one day, or the ocean the other, the Nike Air Max 1/97 VF gives the feeling that you’d never feel that lack of customization for a while yet.
The Nike Air Max 1/97 VF does come with its disadvantages. With its loud colour complex of pastel colours, putting outfit’s together may be harder than first thought. I couldn’t imagine anyone sporting the shoe with Topman’s denim jeans. I also doubt the shoes would be wearable past summer, as I doubt we’d want a £500 shoe detraining amongst the raindrops.
Overall Sean Wotherspoon and Nike have created a collaboration adored by all sneaker fans all over the world, and due to the success of the Nike Air Max 1/97 VF, we’d love to hope that a collaboration is in the works in the near future.
