The fitness industry is currently undergoing a big shake up, and just like most things in todays world, social media is the driving force behind that change. You no longer have to pay a personal trainer by the hour to get great fitness advice. You can simply log onto Instagram and start watching short video clips of fitness enthusiasts giving you ideas for everything from workout splits, to nutritional advice.
One such person in the UK is Bethan Pezzarini; she’s a 21-year-old student and fitness model from London. What started off as a hobby has now grown into something bigger, and Bethan now has thousands of followers online. Under the name “BethanFitness”, she has amassed an Instagram following of over 7000 people by posting workout videos and progress pictures and is also an ambassador for Forca Fitness. She only started in November 2017. Not bad for someone who is ‘only doing this account for fun’.
“I was most nervous for my first post” she tells me. “You don’t know if people are going to be like ahh, another girl trying to be some insta fitness model. But when they see progress and if you show hard work, then they will start to take you seriously”. In a world where so many people are trying to make it in the online market place, you will get found out very quickly if your followers cant see genuine passion for what you do. Bethan not only comes across as passionate about fitness, but knowledgeable in an area that can become flooded with false information. She’s doing it, in her own words for the ‘right reasons’. ‘If you’re just doing it to get insta famous and don’t show your true self, it will put too much pressure on you and the account. You won’t enjoy it’.
Luckily for Bethan she hasn’t experienced many negatives that can come with a women’s fitness account. ‘Creepy Guys’ leaving inappropriate comments on posts, or unwelcome direct messages. It happens, but Bethan prefers to concentrate on her female support. She says they’re ‘looking for inspiration and are far more vocal, and when you see people giving you that kind of support, it gives me motivation to keep on going’. And keep going she will, with aspirations to compete later this year, and an app in development, BethanFitness can only go from strength to strength. As a girl of many talents, hopefully this won’t take away from her ability to play the harp.
